A review of the lunch buffet at the Sukhothai Hotel Bangkok, known for its high food quality and 5-star service.
Of course, the price is also considerably high to reflect the quality, to a level in which many may wonder if it’s really worth it. So, read on as we have an answer for you.
.
Overview

Strong Points
- The food is absolutely delicious.
- The menu is quite limited, but every dish has been carefully selected.
- Good ambiance
- 5-star hotel service
- Can dine for 3 hours.
Weak Points
- High price
- The crab-meat curry with fermented rice noodle
- Available only on weekdays.
- The ice cream scooper is immersed in water after each use, rendering it looking a bit sordid after using it for a while.
- Irregular servings of the ‘Schiacciatina’ Signature Pizza.
The lunch buffet at the Sukhothai Hotel Bangkok is held at the Colonnade restaurant every Monday – Friday between 12.00-15.00 hrs., which is a time that is not very convenient for many people, and at a rate of which is considered as pretty expensive (1,350++ or about 1,590 baht net).
But if you by any chance have the opportunity to be around the area, we would like you to at least drop by and experience it at least once due to the ideal location, excellent food and service.
Personally, we think that it’s worth every baht.
Ambiance

The hotel is attractively decorated in an elegant and modern Thai style.

Other Menu Items
Listed below are a few of the menu items that we tried out.
Seafood

The shrimp was very fresh and tender.
The crabs were not so large, but the flesh was firm and aromatic.
The squid was fresh, tender, not too salty, and gave off a mild aroma of the sea.

Oysters were also fresh and can be eaten with complete confidence.
The seafood dipping sauce although several dishes of the lunch buffet at the Sukhothai Hotel Bangkok, were more geared towards a western taste, the seafood sauce was satisfactorily spicy, flavorful, and came complete with sourness, saltiness, sweetness, and filled with the mouth-watering aroma of onions, chilies, and garlic.
Taking it with salmon renders it into becoming a tasty spicy salmon Thai-style salad.
Japanese Cuisine

Sashimi
Premium-grade salmon, tuna, and sea bass. You will not be disappointed.

Sushi
The rice was plump and sticky, loosely molded, with a light sour taste. Personally, I think the rice was a bit too much compared to the meat, but still very tasty.
Western Choices

Schiacciatina
Signature pizza puff (located on the right side of the pizza with the corn topping). Thin crispy flour, with a topping that included wild rocket, mascarpone, and parma ham, lightly salty, creamy aroma, accompanied by a slight bitter taste.
Oh my! absolutely delicious.
Other types of Pizza
Thin crispy flour, generous topping and cheese, taste comes from food ingredients. Also delicious, but cannot be compared to Schiacciatina.

Pasta
Can be ordered at the chef per your preferences. We tried the carbonara, which was soft, not too soggy, with generous portions of cheese, salty bacon, flavored towards a Western liking which many diners might not like. But personally, we liked it a lot.

Cold Cuts and Cheese
Extensive choice, but we weren’t sure what is what. So, we tried what we were most familiar with, the Prosciutto. Mildly salty without the musty aroma. Goes very well with the pizza.
Thai Cuisine

Deep-Fried Soft-shell Crab
Not too greasy, juicy meat, and gave off a mouth-watering onion and garlic aroma.

‘Larb Gai’ (Minced chicken spicy salad)
Soft chicken meat, mild and not too spicy, but fragrant with spicy salad condiments.
Squid Spicy Salad
Fresh squid, full spicy and sour salad flavored. Very little artificial lime smell and gave out a real lemon scent.
Personal taste preferences of both the Larb Gai and Squid Spicy Salad can be requested directly to the chef.
Crab-meat Curry with Fermented Rice Noodle
Considerable amount of crab meat, sweet curry sauce, a bit on the spicy side, fragrant curry paste, but does not contain the full required coconut milk. Quite diluted.
Pork in Southern Thai-style Yellow Curry
Tender pork meat, clear taste of the curry paste. Equal blend of sweet, salty, and spiciness. Delicious.
Desserts

Sticky Toffee Pudding
A moist sponge cake, with juiciness from the sauce, with sweetness from the simmered dates. Fragrant and not too hard on the throat. Personally, I’m just okay with it, but my lady companion absolutely loved it.

Tarts
Crispy flour, light, creamy, sweet, smooth, not too greasy, with a slight scent of rosemary.

Green Tea Cake
The cake batter was not very juicy, but the green tea cream was very fragrant. Mildly sweet. You can give it a try.

Ice Cream
Homemade ice cream in little jars. Rich with small bits of ice crystals in the ice cream. Personally, I liked the chocolate flavor the most as it was really strong and intense.
