The 25 Best Restaurants in Amnat Charoen, Affordable and Delicious.

Best Restaurants in Amnat Charoen, Affordable and Delicious.

We’ll take you on a tour of 25 delicious restaurants in Amnat Charoen, a small town inhabited by camera-shy charming locals. But their Thai BBQ is a must-try, as well as their divine Vietnamese cuisine and super delicious and spicy papaya salad (Som Tum).

Here, you will find several original restaurants that have been open for 40-100 years. So, let’s take a look at what they have to offer.

The Best Restaurants in Amnat Charoen

Som Tum Yai Purng

ส้มตำยายเพิง

The most famous papaya salad restaurant and it would not be wrong to call it the number one in Amnat Charoen.

Their recipe calls for big, sliced chunks of papaya. At first glance, it may look soft but is actually very crispy and goes well with the sweet, salty, sour, and spiciness dressing.

ส้มตำยายเพิง

Som Tum Yai Purng currently has two branches. The newer branch is much more spacious and is located downtown. But we went to the original branch which features a small shack located along the main road outside of the city center.

Granny Purng would prepare the salad in a large mortar, then package it into individual plastic bags. New portions are prepared when the stock is sold out.

This restaurant doesn’t feature any other menu items and you cannot request a customized dish with less spiciness.

Prices are also considered a bit higher when compared to other som tum restaurants, and it has attracted a number of opposing fans. But after tasting it, there’s no argument on how good it is.

Ing Tarn Vietnamese Restaurant

อิงธาร อาหารเวียดนาม อำนาจเจริญ

Ing Tarn, a Vietnamese restaurant that has been selling food based on their family recipes for more than 40 years, is one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Amnat Charoen (along with Ku Khwan Restaurant, which we didn’t have the chance to try out).

อิงธาร อาหารเวียดนาม อำนาจเจริญ
อิงธาร อาหารเวียดนาม อำนาจเจริญ

We liked every menu, from the charcoal-grilled pork naem nueang (Vietnamese meatball wraps) which was ideally complimented by its mellow peanut-fragrant dipping sauce, the crispy Vietnamese crepe, which gave off an aroma similar to deep-fried oysters but not as greasy, to the Vietnamese snakehead fish noodles which gave off a nice aroma of the fish, and most importantly, contained no fishbones.

The Kanom Pak Mor (steamed pork dumplings) and Ruammitr dessert (multi-colored noodles mixed with fragrant coconut milk topped with shaved ice) are also very delicious.

Ing Tarn is one the best Vietnamese restaurants that we’ve ever tasted and not to be missed on your next trip to Amnat Charoen.

Jeh Daeng Kaeng Aom

เจ๊แดง แกงอ่อม

Jeh Daeng Kaeng Aom, is a restaurant offering Isarn (northeastern) cuisine that introduced us to bitterness and Soi Ju (raw beef dipped in spicy and bitter sauce)!! Suitable for those who like to try out local traditional Isarn food.

เจ๊แดง แกงอ่อม

The restaurant’s spicy Laotian papaya salad gave off a nice aroma of fermented fish. Their grilled ox tongue was also noteworthy, being both chewy and had a nice grilled beef aroma. But it was absolutely in contrast with the ‘jaew kom’ bitter taste.

I attempted to follow up with the aom spicy soup thinking that it would provide an additional flavor to help reduce the bitterness. How wrong I was. It turned out to be also bitter but was complemented by the flavorful fermented fish. Eventually, it turned out to be quite delicious.

เจ๊แดง แกงอ่อม

Before finishing our meal, the restaurant probably saw that we took a lot of photos, so they also brought in “Soi Ju” for us to sample.

The dish consisted of raw beef, liver, and sabai nang (the cow’s stomach), etc. All of them had no unwanted beefy or bloody smell. The red meat was especially soft and sweet and of course, accompanied by the bitter dipping sauce.

At first glance, the shop’s storefront looked like a low roadside shack, but actually, the shop also has a backyard that featured a modernly-designed rice field.

Actually, this restaurant was not initially featured in our plans, but seeing that it was swarmed by a large number of customers attracted our attention.

Moom Ocha

ร้านมุมโอชา อำนาจเจริญ

It is fascinating to learn that almost all recommended restaurant listings in Amnat Charoen also include this shop. So, we had to try it out.

The restaurant itself is located on the corner of a street near Tessaban 1 Market. It is noticeably decorated in yellow, black, and dark brown wood, which gives it a vintage mood.

It features both an air-conditioned area, as well as an outdoor dining space. It also has a parking lot that can accommodate about 4-5 cars.

ร้านมุมโอชา อำนาจเจริญ

During our visit, we tasted 5 menu items: i.e., basil stir-fried seafood spaghetti, spicy oyster salad, and a Laotian spicy salad. All of them were delicious.

ร้านมุมโอชา อำนาจเจริญ

But what I liked the most was the grilled pork salad with crispy kale in which the dressing was seasoned with a generous portion of chili and garlic, but the taste was strangely sweet and perfectly spicy, and the deliciously deep-fried pork that was made from tender battered pork belly and deep fried and served with a flavorful dipping sauce.

After our meal, we were left with no doubt as to why everyone would recommend this restaurant, and we are doing the same here. Highly recommended.

Sumran Sun-Dried Beef Jerky

ร้านสำราญ เนื้อแดดเดียว

A modest shop selling 100-year-old recipe sun-dried beef jerky. The shopfront may be confusing as it is not so inviting, but once you walk in, you can place your order for dried beef or pork.

ร้านสำราญ เนื้อแดดเดียว

For us, their sun-dried beef is the best, as it is perfectly salted and sweetened. Some pieces were crispy while some were a bit chewy, but not too tough to chew out.

The beef was very fragrant and goes very well with sticky rice. Just one bite and it’s unstoppable.

Very impressive to the point that it should be shared with others. The shop also features a home delivery service.

The Twin Thai BBQ

ร้านคู่แฝดเนื้อย่าง

The top Thai BBQ restaurant in the province has been open for more than 20 years. The sauce is delicious, and the pork meat is naturally soft. The price for a set meal is just only about 120-150 baht.

For anyone with a big appetite can help themselves to the meat or seafood items from the cabinet at a wholesale price of 250 baht per kilogram.

Regardless of what you order, diners can avail themselves to an unlimited amount of vegetables, sauces, and soups.

How To Order
Diners can help themselves to the various types of meat in the cabinet and weigh it by kilo. They also have an option for a set menu. After your order has been taken, the restaurant will bring a pan, stove, and sauce to serve at your table. Then it’s time to dig in.

Here, there is also an equally old restaurant that is locally known as ‘Sopha Nuea Yang’ (Sopha Thai BBQ), or a new popular restaurant like ‘Somnuek Moo Kratha’. So, for Thai BBQ lovers, this is a province that you must visit at least once.

Larb Ped Kon Lue (Spicy Duck Salad)

ลาบเป็ดคนลือ

Larb Ped Kon Lue, is an Isarn restaurant located towards the border of Amnat Charoen and is close to popular attractions such as Amnat Temple. It has been selling its food for more than 20 years.

The shop has two open buildings and small alcoves for those who want a little more privacy. The parking lot is very wide and can accommodate bus parking.

ลาบเป็ดคนลือ

At this restaurant, it is a must that you order the spicy duck salad or Larb Ped. The taste is sweet and flavorful with onion, chili, and the perfect spiciness. The deep-fried duck skin and kaffir lime leaves were deliciously crunchy. Absolutely enjoyable to the point that you would want to order three more servings.

The deep-fried duck and spicy duck soup were also great. I usually don’t like getting my hands dirty while eating, but for this restaurant, I made an exception and got my hands dirty nibbling on the fried duck.

Larb Kai Baan Rot Det (Spicy Chicken Salad)

A restaurant that has been open for more than 20 years, features a lot of shady trees, with seatings in a large pavilion with a high roof.

ลาบไก่บ้านรสเด็ด

When the weather is hot, they will turn on the water sprinkler on the roof to reduce the heat which emulates an ambiance of having a meal during a rainfall.

For those who prefer a bit more privacy, the restaurant also has a small alcove for its diners.

ลาบไก่บ้านรสเด็ด

Larb Kai Rot Det, features their signature spicy chicken salads that are nicely salted and slightly sweet, topped with deep-fried chicken skin and crispy kaffir lime leaves to add texture.

Also noteworthy are the om khai orn (spicy egg curry), deep-fried catfish, and fermented crab spicy salad that features a mild aroma of fermented fish sauce, which are all equally delicious.

Baan Pinto 1984

บ้านปิ่นโต (พ.ศ. 2527)

The province’s most popular breakfast restaurant was opened since 2014. It is very popular among customers but can still maintain an efficient and friendly service.

Here, diners can find a complete set of breakfast dishes, such as kuay jub yuan (Vietnamese rice noodle soup with pork spare ribs), kai kra-ta (pan-fried egg with toppings), congee, soft-boiled eggs, tea, coffee, or even tom yum instant noodles.

Can’t think of what to have for breakfast? Pay them a visit and they will help you come up with a delicious breakfast meal.

บ้านปิ่นโต (พ.ศ. 2527)

On our visit, we tasted the traditional kuay jub noodles, in which the highlight was the short, fat, chewy noodles. Kai kra-ta, which resembles a fried egg, topped with minced pork, Chinese sausages and gave out a light margarine aroma.

We also ordered Vietnamese bun, pork congee, and traditional coffee. Everything tasted delicious.

Start your early morning with a meal here and you won’t be disappointed.

Jie Loong Pochana

จื่อหลงโภชนา

A breakfast restaurant named after “Ju Loong”, or “Jie Loong” in Mandarin, who is a key character from the “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” novel.

The restaurant does not feature as many menu items as Baan Pinto 1984, but kai kra-ta, Vietnamese buns, Thai-style pork blood soup, kuay jub yuan, and traditional coffee, are similarly offered as well. Overall, most of their dishes are compatible.

จื่อหลงโภชนา

The highlight of this restaurant is the kao-lao (clear pork soup with boiled entrails) and dim sum.

In my opinion, the dim sum with its soft dough and pork filling was noteworthy.

Also worth mentioning are the century egg (preserved egg) dim sum that was served with fresh ginger, and ‘kao-lao’.

Kuay Jub Koong

ก๋วยจั๊บกุ้ง

When I came across the name for the first time, I thought it was the traditional Chinese roll noodle soup (kuay jub), but it’s actually a Vietnamese noodle (kuay jub yuan) shop that has been in business for more than 20 years.

So, the next time you see the word “kuay jub” in Amnat Charoen, assume that it would be the Vietnamese version of the noodles.

ก๋วยจั๊บกุ้ง

The recommended menu here is the Vietnamese noodles in which you can choose from (frozen) shrimp, pork patty, chicken, and chicken feet. Or you can even request them to put in everything.

The shop’s soup is mellow with a nice fried shallot aroma. The noodles were smooth and easy to consume.

ตีนไก่ต้ม

To complement your meal, I recommend also ordering the fat chubby chicken feet as an additional side dish.

Kuay Jub Kafae

ก๋วยจั๊บ กาแฟ

Another of the province’s old Vietnamese noodle shop has been opened for 30 years and is located near the clock tower intersection.

Originally, they also sell other food items but eventually settled to only offer Kuay Jup and traditional coffee.

ก๋วยจั๊บ กาแฟ

We tried the mixed noodles. The noodles were satisfyingly smooth and was nicely supplemented by the thick soup with a mellow sweet flavor. Unlike the Kuay Jup Koong restaurant, the bowl was slightly smaller in size (and cheaper as well).

ปอเปี๊ยะทอด

Another menu that I think they do well is the fried spring rolls stuffed with bean sprouts, and vermicelli. The flour was crispy without being too greasy and goes well with the side vegetables and dipping sauce.

Lak Muang Kuay Tiew Rue

หลักเมืองก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ

An old boat noodle shop in Amnat Charoen, located opposite the City Pillar Shrine, only sells noodles and no rice dishes.

หลักเมืองก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ

The shop’s selling point is the spicy-sweet soup. It is absolutely delicious without the need for any additional seasoning.

Though the braised beef was not as tender as I thought, it was sufficiently soft and fragrant. The fresh beef and meatballs were delicious. The noodle was served with slightly grilled chili in a soy sauce cup, which was absolutely spicy!

Tiengna Cafe & Restaurant

Tiengna Cafe & Restaurant
Tiengna Cafe & Restaurant

A cafe-cum-restaurant in a Thai-style cottage, features both air-conditioned and open-air zones. The open-air zone is surrounded by lotus ponds with cute ducks swimming around. It is one of the most photographed restaurants in the Amnat Charoen.

ชีสเค้ก

They have a wide variety of menu items that include coffee, thick cheesecake (which I like), as well as tasty Thai and Western cuisine.

The restaurant allows a lot of their customers to just order a coffee and a piece of cake and just lounge around.

Amnat Charoen Night Market

ตลาดโต้รุ่ง อำนาจเจริญ

The shopping area, which is about 150 meters long, is usually bustling in the evenings. A lot of the shops caught our eye with many shops.

If there wasn’t any self-restraint, I’m confident that I would go home broke. So, I just tried out a few shops.

ตลาดโต้รุ่ง อำนาจเจริญ

Mae Tum Thai dessert shop produces coconut milk-based Thai desserts that are not too sweet. I liked the ‘ta-co’ (Thai pudding with coconut topping) and the ‘khanom sai sai’ (sweet stuffed dough).

The coconut milk ingredient was simply delicious enough while not being too intense. I could tell that the cook’s skill is definitely second to none.

ตลาดโต้รุ่ง อำนาจเจริญ

Yai Chan Kui Chai (steamed chives dumplings) shop has been selling their dumplings for more than 40 years.

The shop also offers some unique food not found elsewhere, such as the crispy shrimp dough, which consists of a thin sheet of dough and tastes similar to a brand of popular shrimp crackers in Thailand, as well as the fried spring rolls stuffed with chives that are to be dipped in the sweet and sour sauce. ‘tue ka-co’, or fried taro cake, is also available, but for me, I think the dough was a little too firm for my liking.

ตลาดโต้รุ่ง อำนาจเจริญ

A deep-fried insect shop is also available, selling several types of plump insects for all to enjoy.

Also available is a ‘salapao’ (stuffed steamed dumplings) shop, and handmade ‘khanom jeep’ (Chinese steamed dumplings) which featured soft flour, fragrant eggs, and pork fillings, which tasted delicious.

Nearby, near Mae Tum shop, one can also find tasty toddy palm and palm jelly desserts.

ตลาดโต้รุ่ง อำนาจเจริญ

Tasty spicy papaya salad, chicken rice, grilled fish, stewed duck, etc. can also be found, all of which are readily available for hungry diners.

Pad Thai Kong Bin

ผัดไทยกองบิน

A small shop selling pad thai, which may not be too obvious at first glance, offers not only their well-known pad thai dish, but also kuay jub yuan, with options of regular noodles, vermicelli, and ‘mee yok’ (jade noodles)

ผัดไทยกองบิน

The taste of the shop’s pad thai is uniquely and nicely salted, a combination of slightly sweet and sour, accompanied by the nice aroma of the stir-fried eggs, but only gave out a slight aroma of the tamarind.

The dish is garnished with crispy fried tofu and eaten with side dishes like lime, bean sprouts, and chives. Grounded roasted peanuts is also available at every table to be sprinkled on the dish as well.

It may not be the type of pad thai typically found in the central region of Thailand that most people are familiar with, but I think it is delicious enough to be worth a mention.

Kuay Tiew Koon Tawee

ผัดไทยกองบิน

An old beef noodle shop that has been in business since 1957.

The shop features high ceilings, dark brown wooden tables, and a long bench, reminding me of an atmosphere similar to a school cafeteria in the past.

Besides noodles, the shop also offers grilled beef, ‘koi’ (Northeastern-style sliced meat spicy salad), ‘larb’ (Northeastern-style minced meat spicy salad), and sticky rice, but surprisingly, no papaya salad.

ผัดไทยกองบิน

The shop’s dishes are not too spicy, the grilled meat is not to tough but still chewy, and has a mild meaty smell. The ‘jaew’ (chilli dipping sauce) is not too bitter and is easy to consume.

The noodle soup is mildly sweet and not too greasy, while the beef is slightly tough and requires a little chewing. The dish goes well with chili peppers and a large plate of side dish vegetables.

Overall, the food tastes good, but their meatballs were not so tender.

Khanom Jeen Jae Noi

ขนมจีนเจ๊น้อย

ขนมจีนเจ๊น้อย

Goes very well with the mellow ‘sua’ curry soup that has a mild aroma of fermented fish, or the ‘kaeng pa’ (hot and spicy curry) with its distinct aroma, but not too overwhelmingly pungent, accompanied by a large side dish of vegetables. Extremely delicious.

If you want to taste the restaurant’s most popular menu, you must order the ‘nam-ya kra-ti’ (coconut milk curry). Make sure you arrive early as it tends to sell out very quickly.

Yok

ข้าวต้มหยก

A-la-carte made-to-order restaurant that has been open for 20 years and is frequented by a large number of regular customers.

We arrived at the restaurant around 8:00 p.m. and the Plan A and Plan B intended dishes that I aimed for were all sold out.

In the end, I had no choice but to go to Plan C, i.e. the desperate item…

ข้าวต้มหยก

The stir-fried minced pork with Chinese olives features minced pork that are stir-fried until almost crispy. The aroma of the Chinese olives was not so distinct, but it was fragrant crispy garlic.

The stir-fried morning glory and crispy pork belly were nicely salted by the fragrant fermented soybeans, chili, and garlic. Bonus points is added due to the pork belly which was still crispy when served.

The stir-fried squid with salted egg, featured fresh squid that is stir-fried with rich salted egg sauce. Absolutely delicious when eaten with boiled rice.

Amnat Charoen definitely has a lot to offer for late-night hungry diners, who would like tasty savory dishes accompanied by hot soft-boiled rice.

Som Tum Yai Pun

ร้านส้มตำยายพัน

A local shop that the hotel staff pointed out is a small building that only has a few seatings next to the shop.

If you pay a visit between 11.00-13.00 hrs., there will also be a cart selling Thai desserts that is parked opposite the shop. For anyone who knows that they can’t tolerate too spicy food, don’t forget to buy some dessert to soothe your taste buds.

ร้านส้มตำยายพัน

The shop’s most popular menu item features a large tray of som tum that can be shared by 2-3 people. Ordering like a local will get you a very hot and spicy som tum salad with almost no sweet taste at all, and goes well with side dishes such as vegetables, boiled eggs, pork rinds, cherry clams, etc.

We also ordered the deep-fried silkworm pupa as a side dish, that was nicely salted, juicy, and enjoyingly exploded in our mouth when bitten.

ร้านส้มตำยายพัน

But what I want to focus on for this shop is their grilled pork, in which the meat is perfectly marinated, making it tender, and perfectly salted, while not being too dry or tough.

It also comes with a bit of fat thus adding a satisfying taste, a nice grilled and marinating aroma. Absolutely not to be missed.

Jaew hon (hot pot with spicy thick soup) large set provides a generous serving of tender meat, and fragrant lemongrass soup, and is accompanied with a choice of mild bitter jaew sauce and a thick pickled garlic sauce. Or you can try mixing them together which will result in another uniquely delicious sauce.

Kaeng Khun Sung

A popular attraction to visit, dine, and chill out, along the Mekong River.

When the water tide is very low, we can take a walk along the numerous rocky isles right up to the mid-river section. But be very careful not to cross over to the Laos side as you might get arrested for illegal entry.

แก่งคันสูง

Kaeng Khun Sung also boasts several rafts which are actually Isarn cuisine restaurants. However, each raft has its own different service fees.

For anyone who wants to splash around in the water, they also have swimming rings and life vests to rent out at affordable prices.

We tried out a raft on the far right, the “Krua Phai Rim Khong” restaurant and ordered larb pla kang (redtail catfish spicy salad), som tum, and sticky rice, all of which came in generous servings and was considerably delicious.

The price of the food is slightly higher than other restaurants, but if taking into consideration the ambiance with the sound of the water lapping against the rock and the cool breeze, I say that it was worth it.

In addition to rafts and cool streams, the area also features a Buddha statue and Thao Vessuwan deity for the faithful to pay their respects here.

Perfect to be taken with other grilled dishes. Disappointingly it was all sold out by the time I arrived.
